The harbour of Yarmouth & its port serves ferries bound for Lymington on the mainland. Yarmouth was the 1st Island settlement to be granted a royal town charter, in 1135. The town has been attacked & raided on number of occasions until Henry VIII improved things by building a stone castle, for the town. Yarmouth too has a Grade II listed timber pier dating from 1876 measuring over 700ft long & featuring a record the names of those who helped fund the pier's restoration engraved into its 500+ planks. The annual Yarmouth `Old Gaffers' Festival held in late May and early June is one of the largest maritime events held on the Isle of Wight. Attracting over a 100 of 'Old Gaffers' - gaff rigged boats. This event partners a large shore based festival including music, shows & concessions stalls suitable for all ages. Furthermore Yarmouth is a favourite destination for visiting yachtsmen with the harbour boasting an extensive range of berthing and on-shore facilities, such as shower and laundry facilities, ice and gas as well as boatyards & chandlers.
